WRC Experiences Growth, Builds Capacity in 2016

For the Women’s Resource Center, 2016 was a pivotal year for growth that included expanded programs and services, an increased number of beneficiaries, broadened internal capacity, and new partnerships and strengthened existing partnerships with the business community and mission-related nonprofits. More specifically WRC: Expanded Programs Experienced a 55% increase in women utilizing counseling services, surpassing our 38% goal. Served 90 women and men in informal education workshops on women’s health, women’s rights, financial literacy, and parenting. Provided school outreach workshops to 77 students on alcohol awareness, peer pressure, domestic violence, and gender roles. Piloted a multimedia program to help students increase technology skills and deal with issues like cyber bullying. Broadened Internal Capacity Created three new staff positions to expand our capabilities, including Executive Director, Donor Relations Manager, and Communications and Marketing Officer. Supported staff through 356 hours of training. Implemented new monitoring and evaluation processes. Built and Expanded Partnerships Conducted 42 training workshops to enhance the capabilities of our partner organizations. Developed campaigns on domestic violence and gender equality that impacted more than 1,100 people. Through internal programs and partnerships we reached 2568 direct beneficiaries (1743 women) in the past year. This growth and record of success was accomplished with a budget of approximately $83,000 thanks to both our corporate and individual donors. Taking expenses into consideration, WRC ended the year in an essentially break-even position. Plans for 2017 include increasing the number of local women served, including greater community outreach efforts and further expanding our referral network. Also, we will be putting more metrics in place to evaluate programs so we can increase the rate of successful...

Empower and educate 100 Cambodian girls and boys

Empower and educate 100 Cambodian girls and boys

One of the workshops the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) provides is the workshop we give at schools in local communities. We educate both girls and boys on topics such as Alcohol and Drug Awareness, Gender Equality & Equity and Domestic Violence as these are very current subjects in a life of a Cambodian. Currently, 50% of women and 27% of men in Cambodia believe that a husband is justified to beat his wife in certain situations. Siem Reap holds the highest rates of domestic violence in the country, with almost 60% of women experiencing physical, emotional, sexual or economic violence from their husband or partner. Furthermore, alcohol and drug abuse is rampant throughout communities in Siem Reap with participants of our 2015 community survey identifying alcohol use and gender issues as root causes of violence. WRC will provide 100 grade 8 and 9 high school students with education on domestic violence, gender equality and alcohol awareness in our upcoming workshops. The students will learn about the signs and impact of domestic violence and how and where to seek support. They will learn how to avoid peer pressure from peers surrounding alcohol, to become responsible young adults, able to make sensible decisions in their adult life. WRC launches a new fundraiser today – in the Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence thrives when we are silent; but if we take a stand and work together, we can end domestic violence.  Donate and help us educate girls and boys in Cambodia so we can help them live more equitable and safer lives. Auction prizes included Phum Baitang Resort, 4Rivers EcoLodge and Song Saa Island in Cambodia; Amantaka in Laos; Grand Hyatt in Singapore; El Nido Cove Resort in the Philippines; Awanmulan in Malaysia; and Sampran Riverside in Thailand. “We are so happy with the support shown to WRC from the local Siem Reap inhabitants. It’s comforting to know that everyone believes in what we are doing.”– Pisey Khim, WRC Managing Director. In 2016, we are expanding our work to include outreach workshops in nearby villages. Working with the local authority, we have already surveyed local inhabitants to fully understand the community’s current needs and struggles. A pilot program of tailored workshops will run throughout the year, starting February, and will monitor the community’s progress. Our new outreach programs aims to tackle the current culture of silence and stigma around education for women and girls by directly advocating for women’s rights and gender equality in the community. Too often women cannot attend our in-center workshops because they can’t find anyone to look after their children. By maximizing her ability to gain knowledge, we’re maximizing her potential to be self-empowered. Plus these outreach workshops offer the chance for men to...
