Join us as we celebrate our 5th anniversary

For five years now, Women’s Resource Center has actively empowered women by giving them resources and information to assist with their daily lives.

We have had more than 1,000 participants graduate from our in-center workshops. At the same time, our workshops in high schools and at local businesses have proven to be a very effective method for advocating for women’s rights and gender equality among girls and boys, women and men.

We believe we have found a long-term, preventative method of self-empowerment that helps create community mobilization and collaboration, and requires all members of society to actively change the social norms that perpetuate gender inequality.

What is our outreach programs?

In 2016, we’re expanding our work to include workshops in nearby villages. Working with the local authority, we will first survey local inhabitant to fully understand the community’s current needs and struggles. A pilot program of tailored workshops will run throughout the year and we will monitor the community’s progress along the way.

Potential topics for the workshops include women’s health, domestic violence and alcohol awareness, understanding gender roles and gender equality, positive parenting, financial literacy for women and safe migration.

Why do we need to run workshops in the villages?

Our new outreach program aims to tackle the current culture of silence and stigma around education for women and girls by directly advocating for women’s rights and gender equality in the community.

Too often women cannot attend our in-center workshops because they can’t fund anyone to look after their children. By maximizing her ability to gain knowledge, we’re maximizing for potential to be self-empowered.

Plus these outreach workshops offer the chance for men to also participant and understand their role in bringing about gender equality in the community. They are an effective, holistic approach to breaking down existing myths and inappropriate social norms.

What does the research say?

Findings from a recent 2015 National Survey on Women’s Health and Life Experiences in Cambodia suggests ending violence against women requires women’s full empowerment, as well as addressing child maltreatment and alcohol abuse.

The report highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment programs, citing that women with higher levels of education were less likely to experience violence from an intimate partner. It also referenced the need to develop programs that promote positive and non-violence family, home and community environments based on gender equality and respect.
